About me

Welcome to my website!

Originally from Germany, I am a sociologist working on Japan. I obtained a PhD in sociology of Japan in 2003 from the University of Hamburg, Germany. I have lived and worked in Japan for over fifteen years, in Sendai, Akita and Sapporo. I am currently based in Kobe at the University of Hyogo.

My research interests focus on the relationship between consumer behavior, gender, and social stratification in Japan. Since 2006, I have been researching food culture in Japan, including the activities of the Slow Food Movement, the national food education campaign (shokuiku), and Japanese agriculture.  I am currently working on a monograph on the food education campaign which will be published with Amsterdam University Press.
